Quantum Watch Party at UVic: A Celebration of Light

On May 16, 2025, the UVic Optica Student Chapter hosted an engaging event titled Quantum Watch Party in celebration of the International Day of Light. Students and researchers gathered in ECS 660 to enjoy a relaxed afternoon of insightful video presentations, lively discussions, and—of course—free pizza!

The event featured two recorded talks by leading experts in quantum science:

  • “Quantum Technologies: From Inspiration to Economic and Societal Value” by Sir Peter Knight, former president of Optica (2004), explored the broader impact of quantum innovations.
  • “Quantum Computing and its Applications” by Daniel Egger of IBM Research – Zurich offered a deep dive into practical implementations of quantum computing in modern science and industry.

The event provided a space for students and researchers to reflect on the growing influence of quantum technologies and connect with peers interested in the field. With vibrant conversation and plenty of enthusiasm, the Quantum Watch Party was both educational and community-building—an excellent reminder of the power of shared curiosity.
